When Swimmers Escaped Attack, Viral Image Depicts Rescuer Sprinting ‘Full Speed’ In the Direction of the Site.
Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as local of Bondi, has always considered the renowned shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend evening, she, similar to other neighbors, heard pops reverberating through the neighbourhood.
“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was too light and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. She left her home, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces on display signaled something was wrong.
While standing on the road, conversing with a duo who had rushed up the incline in their swimwear, she became aware of someone moving up at her rear. The person was a rescuer, dashing towards Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.
“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. It was just him moving in the direction that everyone was trying to escape from, while holding that large equipment and unshod … He was sprinting at something that certainly every fibre in your being would signal you to move in the other direction.
“Absolutely no pause, but just fully full throttle sprinting.”
A Symbol of Courage Amidst Chaos
The image Ching captured of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many acts of heroism in the wake of the terror attack.
Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid surf lifesavers, officers and paramedics attending to many those hurt.
Collective Outpouring and Support
Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the community, with the patrol base beside the site of the incident transforming into a impromptu medical station. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, such as rushing into the surf to save people needing help.
In the days after the events, statements of gratitude circulated widely. A social media message expressed appreciation for the lifeguards who showed that “kindness will always overcome darkness”.
The group of lifeguards issued a statement, saying they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.
“Thank you all for your kind messages and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the kindness for our team,” the organization wrote. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the aim that it helps those impacted.”
Official Commendation
Waverley council, the local authority that hires many full-time beach safety officers, stated that the team rose to the occasion from the moment the incident began through to late that nighttime.
“People have shared so many emotional stories, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” commented a council representative.
“Our lifeguards exhibit selflessness every day in keeping our world-famous beaches secure for visitors, but what we saw on Sunday should be commended.
“While we mourn and process the horror of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much good we have seen in the presence of such evil.”
