The Mayor-Elect states his intention to live in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central policy, did not confirm his residency plans promptly following his victory in November.
"The choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of directing my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents supported," Mamdani said on Monday.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: thank you for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live there, the community will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he said.
Political Debate
During his election campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
However his rivals, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he came from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Grand New Home
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria home.
With its pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.
Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which is said to has several bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing exceeds what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
