The gravest possible consequences of the global heating for the UK have been detailed by experts, ranging from a searing 4C rise in temperatures to a 2-metre rise in ocean levels. An alternative projection predicts a plunge of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset agriculture and energy demand.

Critical Scenario Elements
- 4C Temperature Rise: Worldwide averages rising well above 4C by 2100 could occur if international cooperation breaks down or if vicious cycles including the Amazon basin dying unleash its huge repository of carbon. This would result in extreme and prolonged heat domes and dry spells plaguing the UK in summer.
- Atlantic Current Collapse: A major ocean current, the AMOC, is slowing down and losing stability due to ocean warming. A collapse beginning in 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Agriculture would struggle enormously and water resources would be completely altered," noted Arnell.
