The state AG has rolled out a recent online portal urging citizens to provide visual evidence of federal immigration enforcement across the state. This action follows a day after a high-profile immigration operation rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering widespread outcry.

American Citizens Detained During Enforcement Action

A lawmaker announced during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were detained and detained for "about 24 hours" after the previous day's operation. Demonstrations broke out in NYC on consecutive evenings.

"All New York residents deserves to reside free from terror," the attorney general stated in a release.

"Anyone who observed and documented federal operations recently, I encourage you to submit that evidence with us. We are dedicated to assessing these reports and evaluating any legal breaches."

The platform provides spaces to send visual evidence of the operation, plus a section to note where it occurred. Prior to sending, submitters must mark a box that acknowledges that "the office could utilize any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, including in a court case or government document."

Information about the ICE Action

The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say included over fifty federal agents, occurred in a well-known area of NYC where fake handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are sold daily en masse – frequently to tourists.

Footage of Tuesday's raid reveal several masked and armed personnel restraining and arresting a person, and pushing back witnesses. Crowds of residents trailed the agents along the roads. An armored truck was also seen rolling through the urban roads.

Political Response

In a Wednesday press conference organized with the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, stated that four nationals were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no situations where nationals should be detained for no reason." He clarified the persons were freed on Wednesday with no charges filed.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," Goldman said. "This is a military-style operation to provoke unrest. It is merely a pretext to provoke conflict for the government to bring in the troops to stop unrest that they have created."

Extensive Outcry

Fury over the federal action escalated – all three mayoral candidates condemned the raid, including Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Yet again, the federal government opts for oppressive displays that instill panic, not safety. It must stop," a contender wrote.

New York City advocacy organizations voiced concern too.

"ICE targeted the neighborhood with tactical trucks, hooded officers and riot gear to focus on local sellers trying to make a living. This action had no connection to community security and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and areas," stated the leader of a rights organization.

Official Guidelines

Agency rules forbids the arrest of American nationals and the bureau has claimed it will not arrest or detain citizens. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has discovered that over 170 citizens have been taken illegally by federal agents since the beginning of the present government.
