Mikel Arteta Concedes Future Role Is Tied to Winning Major Honors.
Ahead of marking his six-year milestone in charge, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his continued role with the club is fundamentally dependent to delivering trophies.
Reflecting on: The Arteta Era
The Spanish coach assumed control on December 20th, 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup triumph not long after. However, that early success stands as his sole top-tier trophy since succeeding Unai Emery.
“Yes,” Arteta responded in response to a query about remaining in charge after his current deal. “Yet it's about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the near future as well to warrant that continuation.”
Saturday night brings the six-year milestone with a fixture against Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal played immediately following his hiring was confirmed.
League Position and Pressure
With trailing Manchester City playing against West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal risk losing top spot in the Premier League before their own match begins. This comes despite Arteta overseeing a squad that has been plagued by over 100 injuries over the course of last season.
The manager is under a contract with a year and a half left on the extension he agreed to in 2024, but is acutely aware that success is required sooner rather than later.
Survival in the Job
Arteta elaborated, stressing the ongoing need to prove his worth. “My belief is that a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you talk here, how you step into the dressing room, the signal you send.”
Arteta continued, commending the unwavering support from the hierarchy, yet identifying the squad's dedication as most crucial. “In the final analysis, the most important ones are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, willingness to improve and give the maximum to the team.”
Latest Fitness Blow
The squad faces the Everton match dealing with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a hamstring injury that is anticipated to keep him out for the coming weeks.
Evolved Priorities
Regardless of the availability issues and the immense scrutiny, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are vastly different from when he began his reign.
Arteta highlighted the team's performances as proof they are close. “Consider the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the standard we operate at.”
Arteta concluded, “This is a standard that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
