Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
