Israelis mark two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza peace talks advance
Israelis have come together throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The attack led to in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"The aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership delayed state remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred around the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to review the terms of the proposal.
A senior delegate involved in the talks indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the morning session finished without significant progress, due to differences over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.
He commented that the talks are "challenging and have yet to produce any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are making efforts to reduce the gaps between the two sides.
Critical Matters in Discussions
- A permanent truce
- The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies deliveries
- After-conflict governance of the area
Public Feeling
In the city's public square earlier, young a woman - whose family member survived the assault on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were captured by Hamas militants - shared: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until all the hostages are released no one will be secure."
"After we see everyone home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.
Outside the leader's home in the capital, people gathered to express their support for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator one woman stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the abducted to be released. But we really want promises that we will be secure."
Research now consistently show that around 70% of Israelis desire the hostilities to finish in as payment for the freedom of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.
From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the severe Israeli attacks persisted.
In the main city, attacks were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and Nasr areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"As the evening arrives, the fear arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."
Health Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had accepted the corpses of six people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area reported another two victims had been brought there. An individual was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking help to the south region, medics stated.
