Far-Right Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile Incoming Leader.
Following a conclusive runoff election, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has won the top job in Chile.
A Resounding Win
With more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third presidency, having earlier been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Campaign Focused On Law and Order and Migration
Known for his strong socially conservative views and praise for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely focused on promises to combat rising crime and radically restrict immigration.
He consistently cited migrants, especially the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to leave before the inauguration or face deportation.
His proposals featured U.S.-style measures such as constructing holding facilities, barriers, security fences, and increasing the military presence on the northernmost border.
Amid a Broader Shift
Many observers view Kast's success as aligning with a wider conservative shift in Latin America, similar to recent electoral outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other analysts additionally describe it as a continuation of the regular swing of power between left-wing and right-wing administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Leading Without a Clear Majority
In spite of his sweeping popular vote victory, Kast does not have an absolute majority in the legislature, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are grouped together.
This legislative landscape could complicate his agenda, including a pledge to slash public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a proposal for which he has yet to provided a clear explanation.
"There are many questions about what a Kast administration will be that we don't know because he has not explained his methods for implement them," commented a political science expert.
The expert continued, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see spending cuts common for the right-wing. But where there is much less uncertainty is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse during the race."
