Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators

The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he claims was an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal directed at attendees during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.

Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further clarified that the gesture was entirely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”

League Context for Owner Penalties

This incident isn’t the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples include:

  • Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, who is known for his media savvy, possesses an estimated wealth of $16 billion, making the penalty easily payable for the wealthy owner.

Recent Issues and Public Spotlight

This event follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team traded key pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Packers.

Moreover, Jones was a central figure in a Netflix documentary that explored his influence in building the Cowboys into the world’s highest-worth athletic organization, despite its modern-era championship drought.

The league’s decision to fine Jones underscores its continuing initiative to maintain proper behavior among all team officials, irrespective of their position or wealth.
