Antony Price, Famed for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
