A group of seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or remain detained.”
